200 Million Packets, $150 Million in Revenue: How Shahab Elmi Rebuilt Trust in an Industry Full of Junk Supplements

Before Cymbiotika, Shahab Elmi had already built and exited companies in telecom retail and media — a background with zero overlap with supplements, which is exactly why his read on the industry was different from everyone already in it.

In 2019, he stepped into Cymbiotika — co-founded with his wife, Durana Elmi, and Chief Science Officer Chervin Jafarieh — around one core idea: people shouldn’t have to guess what they’re actually putting into their bodies. Most of the supplement industry, as he saw it, was built on exactly that guesswork.

The company grew from a single liposomal product to a full line, and has since sold more than 200 million supplement packets worldwide, crossing $150 million in annual revenue.

That kind of number in supplements usually comes from aggressive marketing spend, not transparency. Cymbiotika’s bet was that focusing on bioavailability and ingredient transparency would build trust faster than another influencer campaign — and the numbers say that bet paid off.

Shahab tells the full story of stepping into a broken industry as an outsider and fixing what he found on this episode of Starting Small.
