$40 Million in Two Years, Almost No Paid Ads: How Meredith Cook Built Green Compass on Word of Mouth
Meredith Cook was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia long before she became a founder, and she’ll tell you those two things shaped how she built her company more than any MBA class could have.
After her second son was born, she felt disconnected from everyone around her and assumed it was just what motherhood felt like. The fog didn’t lift until her brother, training for an Ironman, got her trying hemp and CBD for the first time — her husband walked into a local health food store and, in her words, “bought everything on the shelf.” She started sharing it with her mom, and word of mouth did the rest: her mom, who has four kids, started sleeping through the night for the first time in 37 years, and told everyone she knew.
So in 2019 she co-founded Green Compass with her brother and husband. No ad budget to speak of. Just a product she believed in and a referral network she built person by person, guided by something her late grandmother, Billie Jean, used to say: “Pretty is as pretty does, and it’s what’s inside that counts.” She keeps coming back to that line when she talks about the product itself.
The number that stops people: $40 million in revenue in the first two years, almost entirely without paid marketing or PR. Today, roughly 80% of that revenue comes from customers on a recurring subscription — which means Green Compass didn’t just get people to buy once. It got them to come back on their own, every month, without being chased.
That’s the part worth sitting with if you’re building anything right now. Paid ads can buy you attention. They can’t buy you the kind of loyalty that shows up as an 80% subscription rate.
Meredith gets into exactly how she built that referral engine from nothing in her episode of Starting Small.
